Background
The cover art for THANKS FOR COMING is a photograph of Randall Park Mall in North Randall, Ohio, originally taken by Seph Lawless, whose work the members of Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum admire. The now-defunct mall had closed 12 March 2009 (coincidentally exactly eleven years before the band's "last show ever" that took place immediately prior to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic). Lawless is considered the first to have photographed the mall after its abandonment and continued to do so in the years since. [1]
According to Peter Yanowitz, the 2020 coronavirus pandemic allowed the band focus more on "how [the band could] make a statement that’s a fully realized record." [2]
On Thanks for Coming, Michael C. Hall stated, "[T]he world we live in is so comprehensively and corrosively politicized. The record is a snapshot of the moment we're still in." [3] He hoped listeners would have "an experience that feels like it’s facilitated only by listening to the record. Like it takes you to a place that you discover for having listened to it—a place you didn’t quite know about until you took the ride."
